Acoustic Guitars:
Acoustic guitars rely so much more on the timber and structure for their sound than electric guitars. A solid top guitar is one that uses solid timbers rather than plywood for its top soundboard. This timber can be Spruce, Cedar or their equivalents. As 3 layers of thin timber and glue do not resonate as well, ply is now only found on various budget guitars. For between about $300/$400 Australian dollars you can purchase a good, solid top acoustic.
Some acoustic guitars even have solid back and sides. These are usually at the premium end of the range. Size in general makes a fair difference to the sound. A larger bodied acoustic will normally have more bass response than a smaller bodied guitar. You may need a cut away if you are planning on playing up around the 14th fret or so.
Straight Acoustic or Electro Acoustic?
If your plan is to be playing only for your own pleasure at home etc, then a pick up may be a waste of money. But if you end up “jamming” with some other musicians or performing, then the extra outlay will be worth it. Electro acoustic is almost a completely different animal to electric or standard acoustic guitar. With a little reverb, delay and chorus FX, the electro acoustic can sound stunning.
Although we sell various brands of acoustics, our two most popular would be he Australian made Cole Clarks and our range of Cort guitars.
Cole Clark
These beautiful, exclusive guitars are made in Melbourne, Australia. The main person behind the company is Brad Clark. Brad was previously with Maton Guitars as their head designer, before beginning Cole Clark. These guitars use a lot of domestic timbers such as Bunya pine and Victorian Blackwood.
Brad's use of both a sound board sensor pick up as well as an under bridge unit, gives his guitars unrivalled sound quality when plugged in. However, every guitar is unique. A frequent comment is how well balanced the sound is, complete with a “Tight Spanky” bass. These guitars offer full solid timbers, front back and sides. The back and front are “scalloped” as a tuning aid. In the time that we have been selling Cole Clark guitars, we have never had anyone disappointed after either trying or buying one. As these guitars are proving so popular, a delay in supply can sometimes be frustrating. But -- as every musician knows -- any amount of waiting time is compensated for
by owning a superb instrument.
Cort Guitars
Whether acoustic, electric or bass, Cort produce quality value for money instruments. Quality solid top electro/acoustics -- beginning at around $399.00 Australian dollars --are a great 'all purpose' guitar. They have a large selection
of shapes and materials. As always enquire for price and availability. |
